Gangtok, TT.Aug. 8: Sikkim chief
minister Pawan Chamling today announced a “primitive tribe” quota for
Lepcha students in higher education in colleges in the state.
“The reservation
would come into effect from the next academic session (2013) for the
students who want to pursue higher education in the colleges in Sikkim.
The modalities would be worked out,” Chamling said during state
celebrations of Tendong Lho Rum Faat, a Lepcha festival at Manan Kendra
in Gangtok.
The quota percentage has not been fixed yet.
The Lepchas,
considered the original inhabitants of Sikkim, were granted
primitive-tribe status in 2006 by the Sikkim government.
Chamling said the
government is also pursuing the matter with the Centre to award the
primitive-tribe status to Lepchas at the national level.
The Lepcha community has welcomed the announcement.
