Siliguri, Aug. 24.TT: Preliminary
tests have showed that two persons in Siliguri have tested positive for
dengue, forcing the authorities to announce a sanitation campaign to
keep the communicable disease caused by mosquitoes in check.
A rapid test (NS1)
has showed that Gopal Roy, 62, and Sanjay Singh, 38, are affected with
dengue and the disease could be confirmed only after MAC-ELISA IgM, the
examination for the final diagnosis. Health officials said nobody had
been afflicted with dengue in Siliguri in the recent past.
Tulsi Pramanik,
the assistant chief medical officer of health, said both the patients
were admitted to different nursing homes in Siliguri. “We were
officially informed by the nursing home where Roy is under treatment
that he might have dengue. The case of Singh, the other patient, was
reported verbally to us.”
Siliguri MLA Rudranath Bhattacharya, accompanied by mayor Gangotri Dutta and Pramanik, visited Roy today.
“Roy is in stable
condition and his platelet count is satisfactory. As he is a diabetic
nephropathy patient, he is susceptible to infection. We will shift Roy
to Siliguri District Hospital immediately and he will be treated under
government supervision. As far as the other patient (Singh) is
concerned, we are yet to receive an official intimation from his nursing
home,” said Bhattacharya, who himself is a doctor and the chairman of
the Assembly’s standing committee on health and family welfare.
The MLA announced
that the health department and the Siliguri Municipal Corporation would
ask people to keep their surroundings clean. “All people should know
that dengue is a communicable disease and spread by mosquitoes. They
will be told to remove stagnant water and garbage piled up in their
locality to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes. The civic body will also
clean up the drains in Siliguri.”
He said continuous fever, body ache, rash, loss of appetite and gastrointestinal disorder were the symptoms of dengue.
