DARJEELING|TOI: Traffic on the National Highway-55 at Sonada and Kurseong was disrupted for more than four hours on Tuesday, as supporters of the ruling Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) launched a stir demanding release of their party members, who were arrested for allegedly attacking a supporter of Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) on Monday.
Police on Monday night arrested GJM workers Yogen Rai, Laden Tamang and Prabhakar Rai from Sonada town in connection with the attack on Sky Tamang, a GNLF supporter also from the same area.
GJM supporters blocked traffic at Sonada town and also closed Kurseong, demanding release of the three arrested persons. Vehicles going to Siliguri and other Hills areas had to bear the brunt of the protest as they got struck for over four hours.
Vehicles going to Siliguri had to take a detour from Mirik, after coming back to Ghoom from Sonada. Police held a meeting with the Kurseong unit GJM leaders and managed to get the stir lifted late in the evening after giving assurance that they would release the arrested if found innocent after investigation. tnn
According to police sources, the injured GNLF supporter was out on bail in connection with the murder of a GJM leader from Sonada a couple of years back.
