DARJEELING, 3 APRIL: In a somewhat reconciliatory tone vis-à-vis the
state government with which his party has been sparring for some time on
several issues, the GJMM president and the GTA chief executive, Mr
Bimal Gurung, today said his party is for maintaining good relationship
with the state government in the interests of development in the Hills.
“However,
the situation would reach a point of no return in case the state
government chooses to do politics with the functioning of the GTA,” he
said while inaugurating the Floriculture Garden at Mungpoo ~ about 33 km
from Darjeeling. At present over 40,000 orchids are being kept in the
park. It has the capacity to have over 2 lakh orchids.
“The
relation has come to the present sorry pass not due to any fault from my
party’s end. It could have been worse had I so wanted. However, we are
exercising restraint and this is why it is still not as bad as it could
be. This is because I am obsessed with development. We have also learnt
the art of taking the ups and downs in our stride. There are no
permanent friends or enemies in public life. But things would reach a
flash-point if the state government continues dithering over handing
over full power to the GTA as per the agreement,” he said.
“We
have set a deadline that is 9 April. But I want to reiterate that we are
not for trouble in the Hills at this point,” added Mr Gurung.
