GANGTOK, 3 APRIL: After demanding recognition of Nepali as Sikkim’s
official language, the Akhil Bharatiya Nepali Bhasha Sangharsh Samiti
today held the Pawan Chamling government responsible for the lingering
crisis of nationality involving the Nepali-speaking Indians settled in
Sikkim and elsewhere in India.
The outfit’s convener, Mr Anjan
Upadhyaya, demanded that the state government take prompt initiatives to
include Nepali language as a medium for the Public Service Commission
examinations in Sikkim and appoint Nepali teachers in all the schools
right from the primary level.
“This is the least that state
government can do to prove that it is serious about identity crisis of
the Nepali-speaking Indians settled in Sikkim,” he said.
“It is
unfortunate that though Nepali is the lingua franca in Sikkim the
schools here do not have exclusively Nepali language teachers,” he said
at a Press conference here today.
