Speaking to press reporters here today, Pakhrin, who was the president of the GNLF’s Kalimpong branch during the heydays of the Subash Ghising-headed party, said that his party has already put forward itsdemand before chief minister Mamata Banerjee and hoped some movement forward would be achieved during her forthcoming visit to the hills in the middle of this month. “The population of the district is over 18 lakh and the geographical area is very vast. In order to make administration assessable to one and all it is imperative to create more administrative units by creating more districts, sub-divisions and blocks in thedistrict,” he said.
Pakhrin said to begin with the government should upgrade the four sub-divisions of the district – Darjeeling, Kurseong, kalimpong and Siliguri – into full-fledged districts. “Thereafter, the sub-divisions could follow. For instance, Kalimpong alone can four sub-divisions in the shape of Kalimpong, Gorubathan, Algarah and the areas bordering the Dooars,” he offered.
The former GNLF leader, who is an active member of the Gorkhaland Task Force comprising anti-Gorkha Janmukti Morcha parties, said when states like Mizoram and Sikkim with far less population can have eight and four districts respectively, so should Darjeeling district. “We would urge the state government to seriously look into our demand and set in motion the process to create more administrative units in the district for the benefit of not just the people from the hills,, but also those from the plains,” he said.
Pakrin party today pasted poster demanding the formation of new district and sub division he also added that GJM have made it clear now that they will be now fully concentrationg on the developmental work as such he appealed to the general public to support the separtate state movement .
