Siliguri/Jalpaiguri (West Bengal), June 7 : Students in Siliguri pledged on Friday to support the cause of elephant and other wildlife conservation.
Initiated by a non-governmental organization (NGO), the campaign's motive is to generate support for the cause, by collecting signatures and then presenting it before the state government.
One of the members of the NGO, Avijan Saha, stressed on the need for students to join the campaign and save elephants.
"Our motive should be to preserve wildlife so that is why we are educating school students about this campaign. It is important for students to understand about wildlife and its problems. This is a signature campaign; recently so many elephants have died in the Dooars region, so we are making students aware about the cause of animals," said Saha.
He added that once the required number of signatures is collected, the request would be sent to the state authorities to devise programmes for wildlife conservation.
"After collecting the signatures we will go to the state government, pressing on our demand for initiating wild life conservation projects. We want to send this message to the government, collectively," said Saha.
Speeding trains in the region this year has crushed six elephants.
About 50,000 wild Asian elephants existed a century ago, but the first comprehensive elephant census published in 2005 showed a steep drop in numbers to just 21,300.
India is home to 50 per cent of Asiatic elephants.
