Kolkata: West Bengal Governor M K Narayanan today contradicted Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's comment branding some panelists of television shows as 'involved in pornography.'

Asked to comment on the Chief Minister's Thursday's statement that triggered a controversy, the Governor said "I hope not."

"I don't know about the statement. How can I respond to that? I hope not," Mr Narayanan maintained.

The Governor made this observation after participating in a programme here.

Incidentally, while addressing an election meeting at Galsi in Burdwan district on June 20, the Chief Minister criticised a section of the media for raising a hue and cry over the incidents of violence against women.

Talking about television shows on the recent incidents of crimes against women, she said such TV talks shows were "fielded by rogue channels and a section of the panelists, who claim to be social workers, are associated with pornography."

The Chief Minister's statement came a day before the rally by a section of civil society in the city in protest against the spate of rapes and murders in the state.

Informatively, a large number of people, including artistes and intellectuals - many of whom had taken part in the Nandigram protests six years ago - participated in a rally here yesterday to protest the Mamata Banerjee government's 'inability' to curb rising crimes against women.
