Fourteen mountaineers from Manipur, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh , Assam, Mizoram and Meghalaya are back after a 3 months long sojourn to the world's highest mountain peak, Mount Everest.

Led by Surjit Singh of Manipur Mountaineering and Trekking Association (MMTA) the mountaineers reached the summit on the 17th and 18th of May.

At a press conference held today in New Delhi, DS Poonia, Chief Secretary of Manipur said that each State is taking care of cash award for each of their receptive State climbers.

While noting the financial limitation of Manipur, the Chief Secretary said expenditure of an annual grant of 7 lakhs have been increased to 10 lakhs.

Poonia while applauding the work of MMTA, told reporters here that the State Government though is not in a position to give cash award, it would support the infrastructure development of the proposed MMTA headquarters in Churachandpur district which would also be subsequently a regional centre.

The said headquarters would be set up in Lamdan village over an area of 60 acres.

The expedition, the first of its kind is an initiative of Govt of Manipur, funded by North Eastern Council (NEC) and implemented by MMTA.

Flagged off from Kangla in Manipur's capital Imphal, it proceeded to Tawang in Arunachal, then was flagged off by President Pranab Mukherjee on March 20 .

The team left for Kahthmandu on March 22 and the final push to Mt Everest on May 15 .
