Asok slams CM for using Lepchas as political pawns

CPI-M leader, Mr Asok Bhattacharya
Siliguri, 2 September: The former state urban development minister and senior CPI-M leader, Mr Asok Bhattacharya, slammed chief minister Miss Mamata Banerjee for using the Lepcha community as pawns.
“Her supposed empathy for the Lepcha community in the Darjeeling Hills is nothing but jockeying for electoral gains. But the way she has been handling the Hill tangle would further compound it. She is trying to drive wedges between the majority Gorkhas and the minority Lepchas to milk the latter to gain toehold in the Hills. Things seem to be moving in an ominous direction with the possibility of a solution receding in the distance,” Mr Bhattacharya said at a press meet in Siliguri today.
Notably, Miss Banerjee reached Kalimpong today to be felicitated by an outfit championing the cause of the Lepcha community tomorrow.
“The plight of the Lepcha community and their development figures nowhere in the GTA agreement. Now she seems to have conjured it up from nothingness to win the Lepcha over to her side with eyes riveted on the upcoming elections. Initially, she hobnobbed with the GJMM with the same electoral calculations and now with the trusted ally having deserted her, she is out to court the Lepchas,” the Marxist leader said.(SNS)
