Darjeeling, Sept. 6: About 100
Gorkha Janmukti Nari Morcha members surrounded the Darjeeling Sadar
police station from 8pm today to protest the arrest of a lady
commissioner of the municipality.
Police sources said Meera Sharma, the commissioner of ward number 1, was arrested in the evening.
They refused to disclose anything further. Darjeeling police superintendent Kunal Agarwal did not take calls.
Morcha assistant
secretary Jyoti Kumar Rai said that Sharma was arrested after sunset.
“The police cannot arrest a woman after sunset and we are protesting
against this violation of the law,” Rai said.
Along with Sharma, Kishan Gurung, a youth leader, and Debashish Dutta, a Morcha leader from Jorebungalow, were arrested.
Over 1,000 Morcha leaders and activists have been arrested since July-end.
