The formation of a Gorkhaland state will be opposed by whichever party comes into power in Bengal, claims CB Cintury, former east zone president of the All India Scheduled Tribes and Castes and Backward Communities Federation.
He said in a press release that the CPM-led Left Front had opposed it earlier and now the Trinamool Congress is doing likewise. Although the TMC government hasn’t opened fire upon statehood activists unlike the previous LF government, it has been trying to crush the movement by arresting GJM leaders, GTA Sabhashads and other activists, noted Cintury.
He further said the chief minister’s visit to the hills on September 3 was not obstructed by the agitators although they could have done so. The GJM instead called its ‘ghar bhitra janata’ agitation that received full support of the people, making it easy for the CM to come and go back, observed Cintury.
“Many Lepchas were Federation members and the LDC issue was discussed earlier, but the erstwhile Left government paid no heed to the demand. The LDC is for the development and welfare of the Lepchas across all fronts,” he said.
Welcoming the move to form the LDC, the Federation’s former president said the cultures and languages of minorities remain in danger of getting wiped off due to the strong influence of majority communities. He added the problems of the Lepcha community were going unheeded given the voice being raised by the Gorkha community, but the LDC has solved this problem.(EOI)
