The Additional District Judge of Kurseong Court today acquitted former GNLF leader IN Pradhan and 11 others who were in custody since the past five years.
According to court sources, the failure of the prosecution to establish charges framed against them led to the release of the 12 accused. The GJM leadership had alleged that Pradhan, with the help of his associates, had fired on GJM women wing supporters in Kurseong on February 22, 2008. The GJM had alleged Pradhan had fired on the women from his Ghayabari residence and one woman had been injured.
While talking to reporters over phone today, Pradhan said, “I am really very happy that I am finally acquitted. I and my family members have faced several problems during the period. The GJM leadership framed false allegations on me and boycotted us socially. I was tortured and assaulted by police officials on several occasions. My wife Deepa Tamang (Pradhan) was also victimised and had to spend time behind bars on baseless charges. She was also expelled from the school where she was teaching on an ad hoc basis on the orders of GJM leaders.”(EOI)
