Siliguri, 2 September: NHPC authorities have sought adequate security from the state government
to ensure normal functioning of the ongoing hydel power projects ~
Teesta Low Dam Project Stage-III at Ramvi and Stage IV at Kali Jhora ~
in view of the continuing statehood unrest in the Hills, the officials
informed today.
They said the month-long stir for Gorkhaland is coming in the way of the two projects and it would prove difficult for them to keep up the normal pace of work unless security is adequately bolstered.
A senior official said the power generation is going on now unimpeded by the stir at the TLDP-III at Ramvi amid tight security.
The Stage-III project is generating 60 MW power, though the target stands at 132 MW. About the TLDP-IV project at Kali Jhora, the authorities have sound concerned. The deadline for commissioning the project is set at July-August 2014.
However, it is doubtful whether things would be completed by then.
Notably, the two projects at Ramvi and Kali Jhora ~ both in the Darjeeling Hills ~ are important from the point of view of the state government because of their potential to add to the power generating capacity of the grid. A senior NHPC official said the chairman of the corporation has written to the state’s chief secretary, seeking adequate security to protect properties at the dam site and power generation section.
The decision was taken after some local goons had barged into the protected area of the Stage-III project at Ramvi and damaged properties when the GJMM-sponsored indefinite bandh was on, he said.
The NHPC authorities recently have received one company CISF (Central Industrial Security Force) for the security of the TLDP project-III at Ramvi.
However, the officials have stressed on adequate security for all the employees, particularly when they are on their way to the project sites. Hundreds of employees are sitting idle because of the transportation problem due to the bandh, it is learnt.
A senior NHPC official said the progress of the ongoing TLDP Stage-IV at Kali Jhora is not up to the mark.
Other than some technical snags slowing progress, the dragging stir is also compounding its problems.
The NHPC authorities fear that it would miss the July 2014 commissioning deadline. “Since it is an emotive issue involving aspirations of the Hill people, the NHPC officials cannot go far. We are waiting anxiously for peaceful ambience to return to the Hills,” a senior NHPC official said.(SNS)
