MIRIK,22 Oct 2013: Himalayan
Run and Trek, an organisation that has been holding the International
Himalayan Run and Trek Race in Darjeeling since the last 22 years for
spreading the message of protection and preservation of the Singalila
range, is set to hold its 23rd international competition from October
27. The competition is held annually between the festivals of Dusshera
and Diwali.
Organisation director CS Pandey informed
this year’s race will see the participation of competitors from the US,
UK, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, Spain, Sweden and Canada to
name a few. Fifteen of the competitors are women, among whom 23-year-old
Jerry Nathan from England is the youngest while 73-year-old Rex
Williams White, also from England, is the eldest. Williams is taking
part in the race for the fifth time.
Pandey said since the region has become polluted, the racers will conduct a cleanliness drive to make people aware about the necessity of ensuring a clean environment.
The competition began in 1991 and aims to ensure the protection and preservation of Darjeeling’s environment, especially of the Singalila range. The Run and Trek Race will end on October 31 and the concluding ceremony will be held at Mirik Tourist Lodge.(EOIC)
