Binay Tamang still on hunger strike, meets lawyer

Binay Tamang in jail
Siliguri, 5 November
With the condition of the senior GJMM leader and GTA Sabha member, Mr Binay Tamang having improved a bit, police and medical officials today allowed a lawyer, Mr Dinesh Chandra Rai to meet him at the CCU (Critical Care Unit) at Jalpaiguri district hospital.
Mr Tamang began his fasting on 30 October at Jalpaiguri jail, demanding release.
He is continuing with the hunger strike, though he is being administered saline drip.
According to official sources, his wife and daughter met the ailing GJMM leader on 2 November.
However, the previous day, a delegation of the party leaders, eager to meet him, was denied permission.
Today is the second such instance when he was allowed to meet an acquaintance.
The party insiders said the two discussed strategies for the next hearing of the cases Mr Tamang is tagged with.
Notably, some GJMM leaders, including the party general secretary Mr Roshan Giri, had met the Governor Mr M K Narayanan, who is currently in Darjeeling, last Sunday, seeking his intervention to release Mr Tamang. He had been arrested and then lodged in
Jalpaiguri correctional home after the statehood movement was renewed in July-end. Though Mr Tamang keeps refusing to take medical treatment, a six-member board comprising
doctors is administering nutrition through saline drips.
The chief medical officer (health), Jalpaiguri, Mr Jagannath Sarkar, said: “Mr Tamang is now stable. Medical report is normal, though he is still refusing to take oral nutritional food.”
