Cyber crime investigation cell to come up in Siliguri
Siliguri, 5 November
A cyber crime investigation cell would come up soon in Siliguri at the behest of Siliguri Metropolitan Police.  Initially, the cell will start operating from the office of the detective department. One inspector, two sub-inspectors (SI) and two assistant sub-inspectors (ASI) would be tasked with investigating any cyber crime case.
“We have already sent the proposal to the police directorate for setting up a full-fledged cyber crime police station. However, a cyber crime investigation cell will begin operating soon from the office of the detective department," said the Siliguri Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Mr K Jayaraman.
The police officers have been trained over how to tackle such crimes.
“Five police officers ~ an inspector, two SIs and two ASIs ~ have received training at CID headquarters at Bhawani Bhaban in Kolkata and Barrackpur Police Commissionarate premises. We need to buy software and other electronic gadgets to effectively run the cell," he added.
A senior police officer said the cell would make the common people aware of cyber crime, how it is spreading its tentacles and the ways to curb it.
“Cyber crime is increasing day by day. The newer and more sophisticated technologies evolving are helping the cyber-criminals to have a free run. The decision to open up the cyber-crime cell would go a long way in providing knowledge-based policing. This apart, there has been a phenomenal rise in obscene posts on the social networking sites, credit card frauds, hacking of net surfers’ profiles, identity theft and the like. We have been receiving such complaints in galore," the officer said.
However, it is found that the cyber cafes, in general, in and around Siliguri do not abide by the police guidelines.
“The café-owners do not check the identification cards of the Internet users. Name, address, contact details and ID proof of the Internet users are not maintained in the register before allowing the person to use the system. Police seem hardly bothered about the rampant violation of its guidelines,” said a resident, Nihar Majumder.(SNS)
