Those working in the GTA as casual
employees have been placing their demand for permanent status since the
past two decades but without results inspite of repeated requests to the
state government.
After the formation of the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council in 1988 under Gorkha National Liberation Front chief Subash Ghisingh, many people were given employment in the new council on a temporary basis on a nominal salary.
After the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha came to power in 2008, the JAKS was formed and it took up the issues of the casual workers now under the GTA, which was formed in 2011 after the DGHC got revoked.
“Our demands are more than two decades old and they have not been fulfilled yet. Issues of regularisation of casual workers, increase of salary and provision of hills allowance, among others continue to plague us,” said JAKS spokesperson Deepak Sharma today after meeting the GTA principal secretary.
The organisation had launched an agitation in 2008 demanding regularisation and increase in salaries of casual employees in the erstwhile DGHC. However, the agitation had to be kept on hold due to the Assembly elections in 2009.
The state government then under the Left Front had assured to regularise 3,472 of the 6,472 workers under various posts and had even increased their salary, but this is yet to be implemented.
“We have only been given verbal assurances by the state government. Nothing has materialised even after so many years,” said Sharma.
As part of the assurance, the Left Front government had also decided to provide a blanket salary of Rs6,500 to group D and C workers, up from their existing pay of Rs2,500 and Rs3,000, respectively.
JAKS members today expressed satisfaction with the meeting with GTA principal secretary RD Meena.
“We have received a positive assurance from the principal secretary and hope our demands get fulfilled at the earliest,” said Sharma. (EOIC)
