Three long-distance runners from
Kalimpong will head to Chennai to participate in the Chennai Half
Marathon (21km) scheduled for December 1.
Runesh Tamang, Puran Rai and Ramesh
Tamang will run under the banner ‘Run with Roshni’, a project launched
by Mumbai-based marathon runner Roshni Rai, who originally hails from
Pedong in Kalimpong.
Runesh Tamang, who stood third in the
amateur category of the Mumbai Marathon (42km) in January this year by
finishing the race in 2hrs 51mins, is a strong contender. Despite
carrying a knee injury, Tamang does not want to miss the opportunity to
run in the prestigious marathon, Roshni informed over telephone from
Mumbai.
She said, “Prabal Chettri, another
strong runner, was registered for the Chennai marathon, but as he has
some personal commitments, we are sending Puran Rai in his place. Travel
and accommodation expenses for three days will be sponsored by the
organisers. But as the runners will be in Chennai for five days,
expenses for the additional two days will be sponsored by Coach Daniel
Vaz.”
Roshni also informed that Premika Rai
from Kalimpong and 14 other runners from Kalimpong, Kurseong, Darjeeling
and Sikkim will be participating in the Mumbai Marathon slated in
January 2014.(EOIC)
