Siliguri, 27 November
United Kurseong Football Club of Kurseong beat Atharokhai Sarojini Sangha of Shivmandir 4-2 via-tie breaker in the opening match of the Kiran Chandra Memorial Night Football Tournament 2013 at the Kanchenjungha Stadium in Siliguri last evening. The two teams were tied goal-less at the end of the regulation time.
At the start, the Atharokhai outfit, which had two players from Nigeria and one from Congo, was quick to take stock. The players used the space creatively and the moves came in torrents on either flank. But soon, the Kurseong team seized up the opposition well and concentrated on stretching the Atharokhai midfielders and defenders.
Thereafter, they had the lion’s share of exchanges. They got a series of opportunities in the second half but could not capitalise on them.
The Sarojini goalkeeper Ashoke Mahato was adjudged Man of the match. He was awarded the Mantu Bhattacharya Memorial Trophy and a cash prize of Rs 500.
A total of 10 teams ~ eight from Siliguri and one each from Kurseong and Shivmandir ~ are taking part in the meet, which is being organised by the Siliguri Mahakuma Krira Parishad. The finals will be played on 4 December 2013.(SNS)
