Lama disappointed over central projects not being implemented

Noted academic Mr Mahendra P Lama
Kurseong, 5 November: There are over 82 Central projects and schemes which are yet to be introduced and implemented in the Darjeeling Hills despite the Hills getting used to a deafening din for development.
Expressing annoyance over the reality as contrasted with the make-believe regarding the momentum of development, the noted academic Mr Mahendra P Lama, who is set to try his electoral luck from Darjeeling constituency in next year’s general election, said the immense potential for development inherent in the Darjeeling Hills and Terai and Dooars has remained untapped. “A host of centrally sponsored development projects which, if rightly implemented, can transform the sordid picture of under-development to a thriving one of progress has remained un-implemented,” he said.
He said that there are over 82 such flagship Central projects meant to benefit the common people that are yet to be introduced in the Hills.
“Hubbub is made on the 100-days’ rural employment, mid-day meal, gramin sadak yojna and a few others. This is a tragedy for a region that has been vegetating for long,” he said.
He further stressed that mere implementation is not enough.
“Constant monitoring, evaluation and social audit are what are required. This is what the Hills are lacking, adding to the misfortune of the common people,” the academic said.
Hinting that he can play an instrumental role in transforming the picture from apathy to sensitivity if elected to the Lok Sabha, he said an MP rightly attuned to the needs and requirements on the ground can herald huge positive changes.(SNS)
