Former
secretary DN Tiwari today released ‘Sikkim: Itihas ka ghau haru’, a
translation in Nepali of the book ‘Sikkim: The wounds of history’.
The original book has been written by Biraj Adhikari, president of the Sikkim National People’s Party, and was released in 2010. The name of the English translator has not been made public yet.
The book is a compilation of Sikkim’s merger with India in 1975 based on the parliamentary debate from 1973 to 1975. The book notes two amendments made in the Constitution specifically for Sikkim between 1973 and 1975.
The former secretary noted the book in two languages will be of great help to future generations in understanding the history of Sikkim. Tiwari, one of the signatories of the May 8 Agreement, recalled the past and said, “Democracy in Sikkim has not yet been fully established as no one rules for 20 years in a democracy. There still exists a fear among the people here similar to what was felt during the monarchy.” (EOIC)
