Six GNLF activists arrested

Six GNLF activists held
Darjeeling, 13 November: Darjeeling police today arrested six Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) activists for allegedly carrying arms while putting up party flags.   “The FIR was lodged by the GJMM. We have arrested six GNLF activists for carrying arms. They were booked under the Arms Act,” said the Darjeeling SP, Mr Kunal Agarwal.
It is learnt that the GNLF activists had planned to put up flags along Sumeru Manch, Darjeeling to Jorebunglow. The plan was thwarted as they were arrested   from Kaagjhora, a few kms from the town. The GJMM alleged their rivals are trying to break the peaceful ambience of the Hills. “Every party has its rights to put up its flags, but is it right to carry arms while staging political programmes?” asked GJMM’s youth wing president, Mr Tilak Chhetri. The Darjeeling branch convener for GNLF, Mr N G Subba, on the other hand, said they needed something sharp to cut the strings used for putting up the flags on the sticks. “This is why we carried knifes. Arresting us for this is against the law,” he added.  The arrested would be produced at Darjeeling court tomorrow, it is learnt.    SNS
