Kolkata, 13 November
Members of Association for Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR) and a team from Darjeeling comprising of representatives of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJMM), Communist Party of Revolutionary Marxists (CPRM) and Democratic Revolutionary Youth Front today met and submitted a confederation of memorandum to the chairperson of West Bengal Human Rights Commission (WBHRC), Justice (Retd.) A.K. Ganguly.
Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camps have been set up in Darjeeling including various schools owing to the unrest that made the hills epicenter of violence some months ago. APDR along with the other representatives allege that the presence of the CRPF camps at schools are instilling fear in the minds of school children and hence affecting their education and mental well being adversely.
The demand for removing the CRPF camps has been raised along with alleged inaction of local police and state on the complaints of human rights abuses with the WBHRC in order to restore normalcy and peace in Darjeeling, says Mr Ranjit Sur, secretariat member of APDR.
Mr Sur further says that several members of GJMM, Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA) have been arrested under false implications following the unrest in the hills. APDR and the members of the team from Darjeeling demand unconditional release of those political workers.
The demand for freedom of local press has also been made as allegations of forceful shut down of locals channels have prevailed since the unrest. Chairperson of WBHRC, Justice (Retd.) Asok Kumar Ganguly, having acted upon the accusations, has directed the ADG of WBHRC to conduct an enquiry into the aforesaid complaints and submit report within 4 weeks from the date of the communication of the order, informs Mr Rabindranath Samanta, registrar of WBHRC.
