Army XI today defeated Kanchanjunga Football Club of Siliguri in a
tiebreaker in the final of the 1st Saheed Gold Cup Invitational
Knock-out Football Tournament.
The match was played at Goethals Memorial School ground where a huge crowd had gathered. The score remained tied 1-1 at the end of the game, following which the team from Lucknow won the match 5-3 in the tiebreaker.
GTA deputy chief executive Ramesh Allay, the chief guest at the event, distributed cash prizes and trophies to the winning team. The runners-up trophy in the memory of veteran journalist and social worker Surendra Poddar was given away by his wife Maya Pradhan Poddar.
The football tournament had been organised by Kurseong Gorkha Hill Sports Association with the help of various associations. Various local teams and even a team from Nepal had participated in the tournament. (EOIC)
