Darjeeling, Palampur to become new coffee hub
Darjeeling, 12 January: Plans are afoot to make Darjeeling and Palampur a new coffee growing hub of India.
According to the top officials of Coffee Board, the government has given a green light to conduct research to explore possibilities to grow coffee in Darjeeling within West Bengal along with Palanpur of Himachal Pradesh.
The chairman of the Coffee Board, Mr Jawaid Akhtar, recently told the media, “As the climatic conditions of Darjeeling and Palampur are favourable for coffee growing compared to that of South India and northeast, trials are being carried out to explore possibilities to grow coffee in these two regions.” “If the results turn out fruitful we will promote coffee production in these two areas,” Mr Akhtar said.
The Chickmangalur-based Central Coffee Research Institute, Bangalore-based Indian Institute of Horticultural Research and other state agricultural universities have been asked to carry out trials for commercial cultivation of coffee in West Bengal Himachal Pradesh, according to reports.
It can be mentioned here that rainy and dry seasons must be well defined to grow coffee and altitude must be between 1,800-3,600 feet, according to experts. Darjeeling is located at an average altitude of 6,710 feet while Palampur has the altitude of 4,829 feet above the sea level. Both are green hill stations of the country and are surrounded by tea plantations. India is the world's fifth-largest coffee exporter and accounts for four per cent of the total world production.(statesman news service)
