GTA unlikely to attend CM’s programme at Mirik

GJM President Bimal Gurung
Kurseong, 20 January : Despite a thaw in relations between the GJMM and the state government in recent days, the GTA leadership is unlikely to attend tomorrow’s programme in Mirik to be attended by chief
minister, Miss Mamata Banerjee.
The CM began her tour of the Darjeeling Hills when she headed for Mirik soon after inaugurating the government’s north Bengal secretariat and the Uttar Banga Utsav in Siliguri today. Miss Banerjee is scheduled to attend several functions across the Hills until 23 January. In Mirik, she will address a public meeting, mainly of people belonging to the Tamang community. The Tamangs have been demanding a development board, similar to the one given by the state to the Lepchas in February last.
After confrontation on several occasions in the recent past, the CM and the GTA chief, Bimal Gurung, have just begun to show signs of reconciliation. While Gurung shared the dais with Miss Banerjee when he was sworn in the GTA chief for the second time in December last, the GJMM general secretary and GTA executive member, Mr Roshan Giri, attended the Uttarkanya and Uttar Banga Utsav inauguration functions in Siliguri today.
Tomorrow’s Mirik event is being considered important in the sense that if Mr Gurung or any other GTA leader attends the function, it will be the first time after the confrontations that the GJMM leaders would be rubbing shoulders with Miss Banerjee again in the Hills.
However, it is learnt that the GJMM has so far not received an invitation for the Mirik programme.
Mr Giri told The Statesman that his party’s leaders may not attend the programme as they have not received any invitation from anyone.(SNS)
