Chief minister Mamata Banerjee could not visit Netaji House at Giddha Pahar in Kurseong as had been in her itinerary. The CM, who is on a five-day North Bengal tour, attended various programmes in Siliguri and the hills. Among her stops was the visit to Netaji House to observe the freedom fighter’s 118th birth anniversary.
The house which now serves as a museum was decked up in anticipation of the CM’s visit. The house management and the Kurseong branch of the information and culture department had organised a grand welcome for Banerjee, but she could not give time to their utter disappointment.
As compensation, TMC supporters and Kurseong residents had to satisfy themselves by greeting the CM at the motor stand area when she headed back to Siliguri.
Celebrations were held at the museum, but they were low profile due to Banerjee’s absence
The house where the museum stands today belonged to Netaji’s brother Sarat Chandra Bose. Subash Chandra had been interned at the house in 1936 by the British government.(EOIC)
