Just a week after the GTA had announced plans to transform Panighatta Higher Secondary School into a model school, GTA Education Department in-Charge Roshan Giri today laid the foundation stone for the up-gradation of the school building. The construction cost for the two-storeyed building on a 624 sq m area is expected to touch Rs1.23 crore. It has been learnt that the funds for the construction will come from the Rural Infrastructural Development Fund (RIDF) and the contract has been awarded to a company called Greenline.
Speaking at the occasion, Giri said the RIDF will be responsible for constructing the school building according to the GTA agreement. He added the GTA has plans to construct similar model schools in 25 villages. Further, Giri announced the building of Sukna High School will soon be renovated and a new building erected for Nirpania School.
The GTA education head said as many as 90 new high schools and 16 junior high schools will be constructed within the GTA area, each at an estimated cost of Rs36 lakh.
He added if need be, 53 more schools can be constructed by the regional administration. As part of the process of establishing eight multi-disciplinary colleges, new buildings will be constructed for Mirik College and Bijanbari Degree College, while new colleges will come up in Gorubathan and Pedong. Claiming new colleges will also be established in the plains and the Terai, Giri said the GTA is serious about developing the educational infrastructure of the Darjeeling hills.(EOI)
Despite the Trinamool Congress making steady expansion in the Mirik region, GJM general secretary Roshan Giri claimed the party is “least bothered” by these developments and asserted the GJM is still the most powerful party in the hills. “The people of the hills are with the GJM” he said while interacting with journalists here.
Responding to a question, Giri said the GJM is not thinking about the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and that the party has not even discussed about the issue till date. Speaking on the issue of support sought by independent candidate Dr. Mahendra P Lama from all parties in the 2014 LS elections, he said the final call will be made by party chief Bimal Gurung.
On being asked if the GJM will participate in the Tamang Youth Association’s function on January 21 where CM Mamata Banerjee will also be present, Giri said the party has not yet received any invitation. He added the party is currently busy hosting the Krishi Mela across various places in the hills.
