Darjeeling, 3 February : The Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA) Sabha today passed a resolution to form the Terai-Dooars-GTA Development Authority.
According to the GTA, the new body will utilise GTA funds for the development of the Terai Dooars mouzas that have been transferred to the GTA. The justice (retired) Shyamal Sen committee had earlier recommended the transfer of five mouzas in the Terai-Dooars to the GTA. "More mouzas will be added to the GTA, for which a fact-finding committee (FFC) is working," the GTA chairman, Mr Pradip Pradhan, said.
"We can start funding for the development of these areas (Terai-Dooars) soon after such an authority is formed," he added. He added that the resolution passed today will be soon sent to the state government.
The Sabha also passed a resolution whereby the GTA will allocate Rs 30 lakh for each (45) Sabhasads for the development of their constituencies every year.
The meeting at Gorkha Rangamanch Bhavan in Darjeeling today was attended by all the 45 sabhasads and nominated members of the GTA.
On the other decisions taken today, Mr Pradhan said they will soon be sending a resolution to the state government on the process to be initiated to form a central university in the Hills. “It has been decided that the university will be formed either in the Sonada seed farm, the Mungpoo cinchona plantation area or the Mansang Cinchona area," Mr Pradhan said.
He added that plans are afoot to set up colleges, rural libraries and medicinal plant and cash crop research centres in various areas of the GTA.(SNS)
