Top Kamtapur Liberation Organisation leader arrested in Nepal
JALPAIGURI: Dreaded Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO) leader Tom Adhikary, the self-styled vice-chairman of the outfit, was reportedly arrested by Nepal Police on Thursday evening from Bhadrapur, sources said. Another KLO leader Nilambar Rajbanshi was also said to have been arrested.
As India does not have any extradition treaty with Nepal, the police here are finding it difficult to bring the KLO leader into custody. Tom is wanted in connection with the Bojrapara blast where six persons had died on December 26 last year.

Tom Adhikary alias Jaideb Roy of Fataktari village in Dhupguri block of Jalpaiguri district belongs to the second batch of KLO leaders. He was trained in an Ulfa camp in Bhutan in the mid-nineties.

He was very close to Jeeban Singh alias Tamir Das alias Tushar Das, the chairman of the outfit.

He was arrested from a Bhutan camp during 'Operation All Clear' in 2003 but was acquitted in 2012. Soon after his release, he went underground once again to rejoin the KLO.

After Harshavardhan, Milton Burma and other frontline leaders were neutralised following 'Operation All Clear', Tom went to become the vice-chairman of the outfit. Earlier, he used to head the outfit's 'crack squad'.

He had allegedly masterminded the attack on the local CPM office in Dhupguri town of Jalpaiguri district on August 17, 2003, in which five CPM workers were killed and 14 others injured. Tom Adhikary was also held responsible for the murder of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) leader Charan Thakur on October 11, 2003, in Banchukamari Haat, Jalpaiguri.

Tom Adhikary's arrest in January 2003 was a psychological setback for the Kamtapur Liberation Organization. Tom was largely feared among the business community and the tea industry in the region and he was revered by a large section of Rajbanshi youth.

The KLO was formed by members of the Rajbanshi community of north Bengal, who broke away from the All Kamatapur Students Union (AKSU), to wage an armed struggle to form a separate state. The organisation came into existence on December 28, 1995, with a cadre strength of 60. Later that increased to nearly 400. The KLO's areas of operation include six districts in north Bengal - South Dinajpur, North Dinajpur, Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, Malda and Darjeeling - and four districts in Lower Assam - Dhubri, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar and Goalpara. However, most of the organisation's activities have been concentrated in Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar districts.

After the recent blast in Jalpaiguri's Bojrapara which claimed six lives, the Bengal police went to put posters of wanted KLO leaders across north Bengal. This yielded result as soon after that police managed to arrest two dreaded KLO leaders - Narayan Roy alias Tarun Thapa, the Dy. C-in-C and Pradip Roy alias Iqbal Siddiqui, the Assistant General Secretary from Adhikary village by the Indo-Nepal border.(TOI)
