Today, 350 Congress supporters from Naxalbari block reportedly met GJM chief Bimal Gurung in Darjeeling and joined the GJM.
GJM women’s wing chief Asha Gurung welcomed all the new members while the Morcha chief handed them party flags.
Harihar Acharya, trade union central committee member and the in-charge of the Terai and Dooars, said Congress supporters from Tarabari, New Rangia, Trihana Tea Estate, Dhimal Jote and Naxalbari joined the GJM. He added the residents of Naxalbari block are not satisfied with the work done by the state and central governments and their basic needs have not been fulfilled. Acharya further said the people are only used as vote banks by political parties and forgotten completely once the elections are over.
Meantime, Bimal Gurung said he is confident of BJP candidate SS Ahluwali winning and an indication towards this end has already been proved by the meeting in Sukna. He also claimed more people were expected to turn up at the meeting venue, but were held back due to a massive traffic jam. According to the GJM chief, people from outside the GTA area are also supporting the GJM as they have understood the sincerity of the party. Gurung added thousands of TMC supporters will also join the Morcha very soon.
GJM central committee member Santosh Rasaily said election campaign is going on in full swing in the Terai areas. He said an election campaign office was inaugurated on Monday evening at Chenga Busty. Besides the Gorkhas, the Dhimals, Rajbonshis, Adivasis, Meches, Oriyas and other communities are all supporting the BJP, claimed Rasaily.(EOIC)
