Located about 30 km from Darjeeling,
Aranya Baas, in Manebhanjyang has a lot to offer tourists in terms of an
experience of not only living amongst the natural surroundings of the
village here but also experiencing the local culture and cuisine.
Started two years back by a group of 12
people under the name Ankur Unemployed Group, the Aranya Baas is spread
over 1.5 acres of land and provides a taste of all things local,
starting from the three cottages made from local material to local
culture and food..
"The main idea of starting tourism in
this area was because we wanted to promote village tourism in remote
areas so that the people living there can also be financially
independent. Moreover, we want tourists to experience everything we have
to offer, starting from local cuisine to the culture of the people
here," said AUG member Mahendra Sangboo.
Speaking about the entertainment that
the tourists can enjoy in Aranya Baas, Sangboo said, "Unlike other
tourist spots in the area, people staying at our place can enjoy
traditional programs in the evenings organised by live bands and other
village cultural troupes along with local food and bonfires.”
Sangboo further informed the other
attractions include picnic along the river banks, treks across the
forest and helping villagers with vegetable plantation.
Apart from cottages made of local
materials, Aranya Baas also has an elevated cottage made of stones
collected from the river nearby. It has a large dormitory which can
accommodate 12 people. Another such cottage made of bamboos named
Singbung Dera (Tree house) with two rooms with double beds is also
available for smaller groups.
Charges of the rooms made of wood bark
is Rs. 1,000 per person, while that of the stone cottage is Rs. 800 and
for the dormitory the charge if Rs. 700 per head. The charges include
cost of both food and lodging.(EOIC)
