Congress candidate for the Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat, Sujay Ghatak,
today said that though the BJP is contesting the elections by assuring
people on the Gorkhaland issue, the party is not clear on the same.
"Some parties are contesting the elections on the demand of Gorkhaland, but they are not talking about the issue clearly while campaigning,” Mr Ghatak said, without naming the BJP.
“During the last Lok Sabha polls, the party contested the election on the same issue, but nothing happened," he said as he campaigned on the Siliguri Court premises.
According to him, the Congress is the only party which has been consistently opposing the bifurcation of the state.
"Ours is the only party which has been opposing the separate state demand and working for the development of the region instead. We are going to the people and asking them whether they see any development in the last five years in the district. There was real development when the Congress MPs were elected," he said.
Reminded that he had to face the ire of the district Congress leaders in Darjeeling, Mr Ghatak said "There is no Hill Congress or Siliguri Congress; there is only one Congress and that is the Indian National Congress."
He alleged that the party’s flexes for the election campaign were damaged and torn at Sukanta Pally in Siliguri.(SNS)

Darjeeling people should not vote for tourists: Sujay Ghatak
Tourists contribute to the economic growth of Darjeeling hills to a good extent, but it is completely irrational to vote a tourist expecting development of the region, said Darjeeling Lok Sabha constituency Congress candidate Sujay Ghatak referring to SS Ahluwalia, who is BJP candidate from the constituency. Ghatak made the statement today while interacting with lawyers at Siliguri bar Association office in Siliguri.
Referring to the former BJP leader and
Darjeeling MP Jaswant Singh, Ghatak further said, “The people of the
constituency had voted for a tourist in the last general election and
made the ground for his victory, but what he did for Darjeeling during
his tenure at the parliament is well known to all. So I think people
should not repeat the same mistake again.”
The Congress candidate also did not
spare the state ruling Trinamool Congress either. He accused the TMC of
indulging in violence and breaching the democratic norms.
Ghatak alleged TMC of vandalising the
Congress party office at Sukanta Nagar in the town and said the ruling
party is committing such undemocratic acts in fear of losing the
elections.(EOIC)
