Red panda becomes Darjeeling poll mascot
Besides the rich natural flora and fauna, Darjeeling is globally known for the rare and beautiful Red Panda.
Assistant Returning Officer (ARO) of Darjeeling Parliamentary Constituency and SDO Kalimpong, Radhika Aiyyar, has come up with a colourful ‘Voters’ Awareness Campaign,’ where she uses the Red Panda as the mascot for the Parliamentary Elections-2014. “This animation character will take the message of free and fair voting to the Darjeeling voters and beyond. The mascot has been designed as dressed up in traditional attire of various ethnic groups of Darjeeling district,” a press release issued by the Information & Media Cell,                 Office of the District Magistrate, Darjeeling, said.
It added that the mascot also aims at creating awareness about nature and wildlife, which is of utmost importance for Darjeeling district's identity, even amidst the political heat and campaign.
The red panda as the official mascot for elections as regards to the Darjeeling constituency has been approved by the Election commission of India, the release said.(SNS)
