Kurseong/Siliguri, 31 March: The Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) has rejected outright the
‘request’ of Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha chief Bimal Gurung to work together
for the greater cause of Gorkhaland.Addressing a mammoth rally in Sukna
near Siliguri yesterday, Mr Gurung appealed to his former mentor and
boss and GNLF supremo Subhas Ghisingh to join hands during the Lok Sabha
elections and make the Gorkhaland demand. He also extended the olive
branch to Mahendra P lama, the independent candidate contesting the
polls from the Darjeeling constituency.GNLF spokesperson Daya Dewan said
his party will not entertain Mr Gurung's request, as, according to him,
his party and his boss, Mr Ghisingh, the former Darjeeling strongman,
believe that a separate state of Gorkhaland is not possible
now.Ghisingh's close aide Mani Gurung said the GJMM demand for
Gorkhaland is only a “way to fill their pockets and a means to win the
sentiments of the people for votes.”
“Our supremo's vision of Gorkhaland is true and the party does not work for money. We will not join hands with someone that has a demand for a duplicate Gorkhaland,” he said.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Communist Party of Revolutionary Marxists, Govind Chettri, said the request made by the GJMM chief to Mr Ghisingh and independent candidate Mr Lama does not carry weight, as, according to him, the BJP has not made a proper commitment to the demand for a seperate state of Gorkhaland.“The BJP had clearly written that there should be a seperate Telangana in their last manifesto, but has written nothing of that sort about Gorkhaland in their manifesto now,” he said.
In Siliguri today, former state urban development minister Asok Bhattacharya said the GJMM move is “nothing but a give and take policy.”“We sought support from the GNLF and other Hill parties, based on the alternative proposal we had for Darjeeling, but the other parties are playing a give and take politics,” Mr Bhattacharya told a Press meet.(SNS)
