As Darjeeling Hills keeps its fingers crossed ahead of the Lok Sabha election results on 26 May, the Trinamul Congress leadership here is busy encouraging its activists and supporters.
TMC leaders here said Darjeeling is presently “enjoying freedom after democracy was restored in the Hills under the leadership of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.”
The TMC Hill unit yesterday organised a meeting of party workers at the Gorkha Jan Pustakalaya here, where leaders motivated the workers ahead of the poll results. They also appealed to the workers to come forward actively for the overall development of the hills.
Addressing the meeting, the state youth secretary, said:  “All the people, including TMC supporters, in the Hills are curious about the outcome of the Lok Sabha election in Darjeeling constituency, but the people should not bother if TMC candidate Bhaichung Bhutia wins or loses here.
“The important thing is that Darjeeling was not free even after India’s independence, but it is now, under the able leadership of the party chief Mamata Banerjee.”
“Democracy has now been ensured and Darjeeling Hills is today enjoying the freedom that was missing,” he added.
He alleged that the Hill people have always been betrayed in the name of a separate state of Gorkhaland. “Those
leaders are actually busy reaping personal benefits. Hence, we should come forward against such leadership, while encouraging those who think of the society’s betterment,” he added.
He said that there is a chance that elections to a two-tier panchayat system, the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration, and the municipality could be held in the Hills soon.
“We must prepare ourselves for these polls and make an honest and public-oriented endeavour,” he said.
