POKHARA: Manipal Teaching Hospital of Pokhara and the government of India have reached an agreement to provide free medical services to the Ex-Servicemen of Indian Army's Gorkha Regiment under India's Ministry of Defence.
Dean of Manipal Teaching Hospital Dr BM Nagpal and Defence Attache Colonel of Indian Embassy in Nepal Ajay Pasbola signed an agreement letter to this effect at a programme organised here on Tuesday. Families of the Gorkha Army personnel will also be entitled to receive the given facilities.
The agreement termed for two years for initial phase will be extended after that, said Wing Commander—Assistant Military Attache (ECHS).
As per the agreement, the former Gorkha army personnel of Indian Army will receive all kinds of medical treatments including surgeries free of cost at Manipal Teaching Hospital.
In case if the required services are not available at the Hospital, the patients will be referred to India, where the Indian government will look after their medical expenses.
According to Sharma, there are nearly 250,000 retired Gorkha army personnel in Nepal.
The Indian Embassy has also committed to initiate a similar service for the retired personnel of Indian Police.
Manipal, being the first Hospital to reach the agreement with Indian government, the latter has also committed to extend similar agreements with nearly 20 hospitals in Nepal in near future.
The medical facilities will be provided to the respective personnel, his wife, children below 25 years of age and unmarried daughters.
The Indian Embassy will issue a privilege card to the former Gorkha army personnel for the given medical services.
According to Sharma, as per the agreement, the Indian government will have to pay nearly Rs 2 billion to the Hospital on annual basis.
