Darjeeling: Swayed with a ray of hope on attaining statehood after a BJP government formation at New Delhi, the three GJMM MLA’s Dr.Harka Bahadur Chettri, Dr. Rohit Sharma and Trilok Dewan who represents Kalimpong, Kurseong and Darjeeling respectively has decided to sit in the opposition bench in the state assembly instead of treasury bench. Following TMC grab ousting the left front in Bengal in 2010, the three MLA’s who won on a GJM ticket had supported the TMC government and warmed the treasury bench. That these MLA’s should immediately leave the treasury bench was also opined by most of the anti-Morcha parties in the hills. Its group leader Dr. Chettri who is also the Morcha spokesperson will soon
leave for Calcutta this Sunday and will seek permission to sit in the opposition bench to the Assembly speaker. The assembly session is expected to begin from June 6. Sources from the Morcha said that its chief Bimal Gurung wanted the three MLAs to sit in the opposition bench and had informed them of this in a central committee meeting in Darjeeling recently. The GJM had supported BJP candidate S. S. Ahluwalia for the Darjeeling parliamentary seat. Interestingly, it is the BJP who has a single majority in the parliament and the GJM is hopeful that creation of Gorkhaland would take place. The BJP had promised to fulfill the demands of the Gorkhas in their campaign without uttering the G-word. Gurung earlier this week announced that GJM is an ally of NDA from now on and is camping in the National capital to attend the May 26
swearing in ceremony of the Narendra Modi government.
