Mukesh Sharma: After Kurseong, it is Kalimpong where police administration is out on a mission to improve on traffic rules. Police on Tuesday started a checking drive to check the Vehicles disobeying traffic rules checking whether drivers are using seat belts, vehicles are overloaded or not, has pollution certificates, insurance certificates, voucher showing payment of token taxes etc.
Out on the most important police strictly caught hold of those bikers who were without helmets.Riding a bike without helmet is one of the traffic dis-obedience that is seen not only in Kalimpong but also in Kurseong and Darjeeling. According to the traffic law it is not only the rider who has to wear the helmet but also the pillion rider who also has to wear the helmet. Kalimpong traffic officer in charge Praveen Gurung told that many such riders has been slammed with a case today along with vehicles who did not fulfill mandatory traffic laws. However, he added that the traffic wing has also decided to implemented new traffic rules to avoid menace. To start with the men in khaki will now not allow heavy loaded vehicles between 7:30 to 9:00 in the morning which is the school opening time and during 2:00 to 4:00 p.m which is the school closing time.
“The campaign has been started after receiving complaints from the public on regular basis. Any vehicles flouting traffic rules would now be punished according to the law,” said Gurung who is leading the drive.
Like the two other towns of hills, Kalimpong has also been plagued with traffic problems and is in the dearth of a proper parking space in the town. This however has lead the passenger vehicles to wheel into their vehicles on the busy thoroughfares of the town. Like in Kurseong and Darjeeling, the civic authority is responsible of managing a parking slot for these vehicles especially the passenger vehicles but over the past two decades the civic boards in all the three hill subdivision has failed to address the problem because of lack of space.
