There are around 13 tea gardens spread
across Sukhiapokhri and Takhda blocks in the Terai region and have been
doing well in terms of tea production recently. The tea grown in the
region is considered to be of the highest quality and has helped the tea
estates to develop rapidly. Local villagers who work at the tea gardens
have vouched to work harder and make their tea gardens even more
productive. The increase in tea production has also led to the creation
of additional jobs in the region.
In view of the rapid strides the 13 tea
gardens are taking currently, the Darjeeling Organic Eakta Society has
highlighted the importance of tea factories in the region and has
already started initiating talks with the Tea Board. The society’s field
official, Sanjeev Bhadari, said it is important for the two regions to
have their own tea factories. “70kg of tea from the gardens are taken to
Oketi TG on a daily basis and sold at a price of Rs.50 per Kg, which is
considerably low,” he informed.
Bhandari further said the society has
been demanding the administration to increase the price of tea as per
the current trend in the market. “Our society has always worked for the
benefit of the tea garden farmers and with proper development of
infrastructure and increase in price these farmers can earn well and be
self sufficient,” he added.
Bhandari also informed the members of
his society has been given a chance by the Tea Board to visit the tea
gardens of Neelgiri hills in Tamil Nadu, South India to learn more about
tea farming, its marketing and other important factors about tea
production.(EOIC)
