West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today announced the formation of Tamang Development and Cultural Board in the Hills on line of Lepcha Development Board, and assured every possible assistance to develop this hilly town.
"I have come here because I love you all and seek your cooperation to develop Darjeeling into a better place than Switzerland," Mrs Banerjee told a gathering at the Mall after announcing drinking water project for Darjeeling town.
Ms Banejree while seeking cooperation from all said, " Politics should not come in the way of development."
She also announced the formation of the Tamang Development and Cultural Board and read out its members names, a move similar to Lepcha Development board. She said under the Lepcha board some 1000 houses were built and sanctioned further for another 1000 houses. She said the potable drinking water project from Balasan river was complete and needed to replace the old and damaged pipe to supply water. She said the existing pipelines connected to the homes were nearly century-old now and needed to be replaced. "Those homes having pipelines connected will get water right now and those homes where pipelines need to be replaced will get water in three months time," Ms Banerjee said. She said the Balasan river water project cost was Rs 700 crore.
She said Kalimpong town was getting potable water, and the people of Kurseong will get such drinking water in next phase.
Mrs Banerjee underlined the need for maintaining peaceful atmosphere in the Hills for all round development.
"I have come here not to seek your vote, I need your cooperation," Ms Banerjee said, adding that the government would do its work, so also the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) on its job and the Darjeeling Municipality. She also conveyed her best wishes to GTA chief and Gorkha Janmutki Morch (GJM) president Bimal Gurung, who was conspicuously absent in the government sponsored meeting.
She said she heard that today was Gurungji's birthday and that is why he could not make it.
The GJM, however, said it has received the invitation very late.
"Look I love Darjeeling and its people and that is why time and again I come to the Hills," she added. The Chief Minister also said a separate labour department will be set up in Siliguri at an investment of Rs 7 crore. A safari park costing Rs 250 crore will be set up at the mouth of Shukna near Siliguri. She also said the government was aware of the plight of the tea garden workers in several parts of north Bengal. Ms Banerjee said,"the government is also making arrangements to start the 100-days project at the closed tea estates through local panchayats. The government has written to the Centre for reviving the closed tea estates.
She said the government has allotted Rs 200 crore for reopening the closed tea gardens of Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar. (UNI)
