The
South District will host the 8th All India Chief Minister’s Gold Cup
Football Tournament from November 10 at the Namchi Public School
playground. The organising committee, the South District Football
Association (SDFA), has taken the initiative to host the tournament and
final touches are underway. Many renowned football clubs such as Army
Red I, Chirag United, Port Turst Kolkata, Shillong United FC, Khangli FC
Manipur, Kerela Electricity Board, Gorkha Brigade, Kalimpong XI,
Kanchenjunga Siliguri, Nepal XI and Bhutan XI are participating in this
year’s tournament. There are three teams from the state - Sikkim Youth
FC, Siniolchu FC and SAI Namchi.
According to SDFA general secretary
Arjun Rai, the first match of the tournament will be played between
Kalimpong XI and SAI Namchi. He said the governor will be the chief
guest of the opening ceremony where a cultural event will also be
showcased. Rai added the tournament will be played at the Namchi Public
School playground as construction work on the Bhaichung stadium at Ahley
is still ongoing. More than 10,000 people can be accommodated in the
playground and the organisers expect more than this number.(EOIC)
