The Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) today held a meeting with 14
former Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council councillors, for the first time
since 2008, in an effort to revive the party.
The meeting was chaired by the newly elected party president, Mann Ghisingh, on Dr. Zakir Hussain Road here.
The GNLF has decided to start a campaign to demand the Sixth Schedule
status for the hills after Ghisingh's last funeral rites prayers are
held on March 18.
N.B. Chhetri, former GNLF MLA from Kurseong and the party's
spokesman, said: "Former GNLF councillors, many of whom were inactive,
today had an interaction with our party president. We are now trying to
make them more active and the party's central committee will decide on
the role they will be given to strengthen the party in the coming days."
Various media reports had carried Mann Ghisingh's name as Mohan but
today he corrected journalists and said: "Everyone refers to me as Mohan
but I spell my name as Mann."(TT)
