The Adivasi Vikas Parishad, which had called a bandh ahead of the signing of the Darjeeling tripartite accord on July 18, now says it feels “satisfied” after a talk with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Talking to reporters after meetings here with Minister-in-charge of North Bengal Development Gautam Deb and then with Ms. Banerjee, a 17-member delegation said the tribals were optimistic that no injustice would be done to them in the process of solving the Darjeeling problem.
“They have aired their views. Earlier, they were confused as they had not seen the treaty. The Chief Minister called them to tea today [Saturday] and explained everything,” said Mr. Deb.
The AVP had hit the agitation path fearing transgression of the Gorkha Hill administrative jurisdiction on some of the tribal areas in the Dooars and Terai region in the foothills of eastern Himalayas.
A nine-member committee was constituted to examine the issue.
