DARJEELING, 23 AUG: The supporters of the Communist Party of Revolutionary Marxist (CPRM) will embark on a fresh padyatra from Darjeeling to Siliguri to show their support for a separate state of Gorkhaland and to propagate the message that the Gorkhaland demand has not faded in the Hills with the recent signing of the GTA.
“Around 300 party workers will start the padyatra from Darjeeling and Kalimpong sub-division and assemble in Siliguri, where the party will pay tribute to the statue of the martyr, Durga Malla on his death anniversary on 25 August at Siliguri,” said Mr RB Rai, the president of CPRM.
A week ago the principal Opposition party in the Hills also staged dharnas for three days at Janatar Mantar, New Delhi to show its support for a separate state. “Our agitation for Gorkhaland will continue, we will launch several programmes in the future too,” said Mr Rai. The padyatra that will start from Darjeeling will halt for the first day in Takdah, a distance of 26 km. The next day the supporters will rest in Tindharia, from where they will set off for Sukna and reach Siliguri on 25 August where a meeting will be held.
“Throughout the padyatra, our supporters will join us at different places," said Mr Rai. The GJMM has been facing criticism from the Opposition parties like the CPRM and the AIGL for accepting anything short of Gorkhaland. “We want to tell the people that the GTA does not fulfil the identity-related crisis of the Gorkhas living all over the nation, this padyatra is also for the people who are against the formation of GTA,” said another leader of the party.
