JORHAT: The All Assam Gorkha Students' Union on Thursday said the government should take steps to tighten security in the inter-state boundary areas to control illegal activities of the militant outfits.
The organization also urged the authorities concerned to take up other the development activities along the borders to maintain peace and status quo in the areas.
In order to put pressure on the government on the matter, hundreds of activists of the students' organization blocked the busy Sonari -Mon road at Namtola in Sivasagar district for about three hours on Thursday.
They have also submitted a memorandum, addressed to the Prime Minister, to take early steps in the matter.
He said, "We think the deplorable condition of surface communication in the border areas of Assam help militant groups in taking shelter here."
"We observed that both the governments in Dispur and Delhi are not worried on the subversive activities being carried out in these areas. We want the government to consider the matter seriously and take up development work in the border areas."
A student activist said, "Although the Sonari-Mon road is the only road connecting Sivasagar to Nagaland, it has been lying in a dilapidated condition for long. We want the government to upgrade this inter-state road to a national highway."
"We have also warned the government as well as the authorities concerned to take immediate steps to fulfill our demands. We have decided to launch an agitation if our demands are not met," Newar added.
