Along with 6/8 Gorkha Rifles and State police Gaikhangam & Co arrive safely

Imphal, December 17, 2011: Along with troops of 6/8 Gorkha Rifles, a State police commando team led by SDPO, Bishnupur today safely escorted Nungba assembly constituency MLA G Gaikhangam and other MLAs who were forced to stay overnight at Khoupum after cadres of the armed Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) waylaid their path, back to the capital today.

Gaikhangam, who is Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee president, strongly condemning the ambush-attempt by the newly formed ZUF described the latter's act as an attempt to create chaos in Manipur.

Gaikhangam along with Tamenglong AC MLA Thangthuanang Pamei, who is also the Vice Chairman of Hill Areas Committee, Bishnupur AC MLA Govindas Konthoujam and Tamenglong Autonomous District Council chairman G Soihem Haomei, were returning to Imphal after attending a public meeting on UPA and SPF Government's flagship programme at Khoupum when the armed persons blockaded their way a few kilometres from Khoupum.

The ZUF cadres insisted that they want to talk to a Congress leader on the issue of monetary demand and even mounted rocket launcher in the middle of the road with the threat that the convoy would be attacked if their demand is not complied in a positive manner.

While the convoy retreated upto Khoupum and stayed there overnight an agreement was reportedly arrived at between the ZUF group and some local residents.

However, the convoy of Gaikhangam and others preferred to continue the journey only after deployment and arrival of additional security force today.

Upon safe arrival here, Gaikhangam opined to newspersons that last evening's ambush-attempt is an affront to the UPA and SPF Government's effective and democratic implementation of various flagship programmes.

He termed the act as anti-national.

Asserting that the security escort party accompanying the MLAs could have engaged the ZUF cadres in a befitting manner but refrained from doing so as the Government is committed to promoting peace and tranquillity in Manipur, the Congress legislator suggested that it would benefit all if such act is not repeated in the future.

He also appreciated the role of the local womenfolk in convincing both parties to exercise maximum restrain and avert undesired consequences.
