Dooars: Akhil Bharatiya Adivasi Vikas Parshad (ABAVP) expels John Barla

JALPAIGURI: John Barla, the former president of Dooars Terai regional unit of the Akhil Bharatiya Adivasi Vikas Parshad (ABAVP), has been expelled from the tribal body on Saturday.

He had been suspended in November after he had led some tribal leaders from the Dooars and Terai to join hands with the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha and demand a Gorkhaland and Adivasi Territorial Administration (GATA) comprising the Hills, the Dooars and Terai.

The tribal body has also suspended Tez Kumar Toppo, the state secretary of ABAVP's Bengal chapter from his post for one year and Sukra Munda, the chairman of Progressive Tea Workers' Union, the labour wing of ABAVP for two years. This, say ABAVP leaders, is a corrective measure taken against Barla, Toppo and Munda for flouting the body's constitution.

"Our central committee members, after listening to the trio, found them guilty of disobeying our body's constitution. Hence the decision was taken. However, Toppo's case will be revised after three months since he admitted his mistake and vowed to terminate his involvement with the GATA cause," Birsa Tirkey, president of ABAVP's Bengal chapter said.

That the ABAVP would take action against Barla and his associates was an easy guess as from the very first day the central committee and the state leadership had opposed their agreement with the GJM leaders.

Following the deal with the Hill party, the leaders - John Barla, Tez Kumar Toppo, Sukra Munda, Nicodine Minz and Joseph Hembram -were served show cause notices. Following that although Nicodine, Joseph and Tez Kumar had promised to detach themselves from the demand of GATA, John and Sukra stuck to their stand.
