Govt recognises Urdu as second language in West Bengal

Kolkata, Feb 3 : The West Bengal government today recognised Urdu as the second language in the state.

The decision to elevate Urdu as the second language was taken at a meeting of the state cabinet at Writers' Buildings.

After the meeting, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Partha Chatterjee said Urdu would be recognised as the second language in a place where more than 10 per cent Urdu speaking people lived.

Informatively, besides the area under Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), a large number of Urdu speaking people resides at North 24 Parganas, Titagarh, Kamarhati and Kadulia.

Bhatpara, Chapdani, Rishra, Goalpokhar and Islampore are the other places in the state dominated by Urdu speaking people.

According to critics of the Mamata Banerjee government, the decision to 'promote' Urdu was taken to woo the minority voters and keeping an eye on the next Panchayat election in the state. (UNI)
